EF Certificate in Teaching Phonology

1) Phonemic Transcription (Segmental)

2) Phonemic Transcription (Suprasegmental)

3) 5 minute Multimedia Presentation (see samples below)

You should consider enrolling in this course if you are interested in incorporating phonology in the classroom or want to prepare to study the EF Trinity Diploma in TESOL.

COURSE OVERVIEW

You will learn how to offer students the most engaging and interactive ways to teach pronunciation and gain an understanding of theoretical knowledge and terminology to allow you to discuss features of pronunciation with other experienced teachers. With up to 16 peers, you will share your experiences, reflections and materials and observe each other teaching via the use of self-created online training videos.

 

This course is for teachers:

  • With at least 6 months ESL experience
  • Who hold a TEFL certificate
  • Who are willing to spend 2 hours (longer for non-native English speakers) of your professional development time a week on this course for 10 weeks

 

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Explain how the phonemic chart is organised in relation to how sounds are articulated
  • Describe how and where individual sounds are articulated and compare this to your learners’ L1
  • Transcribe segmental and suprasegmental chunks of language, identify challenging components for your learners and propose strategies to support them
  • Trial and review different activities and strategies to support your learners’ pronunciation
  • Propose techniques teachers can use to better help learners with phonology
  • Identify the different stages of the Phonology interview assessment of the DipTESOL course.

 

During the course you will:

  • Research, teach and reflect on the practical tasks
  • Complete theoretical and practical tasks on a weekly/bi-weekly basis
  • Post the completed task in the group
  • Comment on at least 2 posts by your peers
  • Teach a class, incorporating ideas from this course and be given feedback by a trainer

APPLICANTS SHOULD

  • Have over 6 months experience in ESL
  • Hold a TEFL qualification
  • Be willing to spend 2-4 hours (longer for non-native English speakers) of study time a week on this course for 10 weeks
  • Want to gain a deeper insight into the nature of language
  • Who might be interested in taking the Trinity Certificate or Diploma within the next year
